Conflict Management/Resolution

Target Audience

For staff who come into contact with aggressive or potentially aggressive people.

Course Outcomes

By the end of the session participants will be able to:

  • State what aggression and violence is, it’s cause both internally and externally, and factors to look for in assessing personal risk.
  • Be able to explain the process of the assault cycle and de-escalation the aggressive situation.
  • Describing their and others responsibility in supporting victims of assault, and recording of an incident.

Summary

The course is run over 1 day and includes:

  • Introduction
  • Definition of aggression
  • Cause of aggression
  • Communication skills
  • De-escalation
  • Situation responses
  • Personal risk assessment
  • Staff support
  • Incident reports
  • Summary and evaluation

There are no physical components in this course.

Evaluation

Participants are not assessed during the course but are required to complete an evaluation sheet at the end.

Certificates of attendance will be issued to all those who complete the course.

BREAKAWAY SKILLS

Target Audience

For Staff who have come into contact with aggressive or potentially aggressive people, who are not likely to have to use restraint techniques.

Course Outcomes

By the end of the session participants will be able to demonstrate approved techniques to:

1. Breakaway from:

  • Wrist holds
  • Hair pulls
  • Strangles on the floor and standing
  • Clothing holds
  • Body holds

2. Defend against kicks and punches

Summary

  • The course is run over a period of 2 days, by a qualified Control and restraint (General Services) tutor.
  • This is a physical course where participants will acquire skills to disengage if grabbed by an attacker.
  • Participants should wear old strong clothes and soft-shoes or a tracksuit and training shoes.
  • People will be asked to work within their own physical limitations at all times.
  • This course requires an annual refresher/update.

Evaluation

Individual feedback is given at the end of the course. An evaluation sheet is completed at the end of the course and a certificate will be issued to all those completing.

A refresher course is adviced after 12 months which will cover all of the above over a 1 day period.


Control and Restraint

Target Audience

For staff who come into regular contact with aggressive or potentially aggressive patients/clients and are likely to have to use physical restraint techniques.

Course Outcomes

By the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate professional, effective, safe, approved physical Control and Restraint techniques to deal with violent individual with the minimum risk to injury to staff and patients.
  • Demonstrate the role of communication and teamwork while using Control and Restraint.
  • State they have increased their self –confidence in dealing with violent situations.
  • State under what conditions Control and Restraint should and should not be used.

Summary

  • This course is run over 5 consecutive days by two qualified Control and Restraint (General Services) tutors. It is of a physical nature where participants will be shown approved techniques and acquire skills to intervene safely with the minimum risk of injury to staff and patients/clients.
  • The course also discusses legal aspects of Control and Restraint, and its use in the clinical area.
  • Participants wear old strong clothes and soft shoes or a tracksuit and training shoes.
  • People will be asked to work within their own physical limitations at all times.
  • This course requires an annual refresher/update.

Evaluation

Individual feedback is given at the end of the course. An evaluation sheet is completed at the end of the course and a certificate will be issued to all those completing.

A yearly refresher is advised which will cover all of the above over a 3 day period.


3 Hour Personal Safety & Awareness

Target Audience

All office based staff & Home visitors.

Course Outcomes

By the end of the training session participants will be able to:

  • Explain their responsibility for passing on information.
  • State considerations to take into account before leaving, en route to and from home visits.
  • Basic safety when using a carpark.
  • Demonstrate a basic awareness of techniques to breakaway from an attacker.
  • Be able to state in basic terms what they shouldn’t do in an aggressive or potentially aggressive situation.

Summary

  • The course is run over a three-hour period by qualified tutors.
  • Participants wear soft-shoes (or tracksuit and training shoes), as this course has a physical component. People will be asked to work within their own physical limitations at all times.
  • Understand the importance of Incident Reporting.

Evaluation

A certificate will be issued upon completion of the workshop.
